The Fangirl

Long time geek, fangirl, mother, and reader. I've got a lot to say, you might not like it all, but it will be honest and hopefully helpful.

Not Great, But Not Bad Either

Rain on Me (Shelter From the Storm, #1) - Eden Connor

Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a decent erotica, but all the other parts of the story failed to keep my attention or interest. I ended up skimming most the story to just read the sexy bits, which are well worth readingStill I think it holds promise for someone looking for realistic BDSM erotica featuring a woman of color, who isn't a shrinking violent. That is not to say there are problematic bits, but many are (sadly) commonly found in interracial/multicultural romance.

Things I liked:

  • Zin is not the typical young innocent girl, ingenue.
  • The Dom/sub and rope play scenes are pretty realistic and very sexy.

Stuff I didn't like:

  • All the precinct/police scenes were cliche and totally unrealistic to the point it threw me out of the book. That includes the unbelievable set up for the undercover operation.
  • There were also way too many convenient, almost laughable, connections between Zin and Ray to be believed. They were so unnecessary and distracting.
  • Ray focused WAY too much on Zin's skin color. While this is not uncommon in white romance, it felt fetishistic in this story and turned me off, big time.

So this didn't knock it out of the park for me, I don't think it's a total loss. I really loved how aware the narrative was of just how complex BDSM can be for a woman of color, especially as a submissive to a white man. Sadly, the rest of the story just didn't grab me. Still worth checking out if it sounds like something you might like.
